2013 Nissan Altima Makes Instant Impact on the Sales Floor

Nissan’s all-new 2013 Altima has some big shoes to fill as it replaces the second-best-selling car in America in 2011, but rapid sales in its first full month at showrooms indicate that the midsize sedan could rise up even higher on the charts. The redesigned Nissan Altima helped the vehicle’s sales increase 25 percent year-over-year last month, setting a new July sales record.

The 2013 Nissan Altima sports a sleek new exterior that brings its styling closer to the larger Nissan Maxima, all while adding innovative technology designed to make it the most efficient Altima yet. Forward thinking from Nissan engineers means the new Altima can forego hybrid technology and still return 38 mpg on the highway, which is better than the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and mild-hybrid Chevy Malibu Eco.

“Nissan is pushing hard to improve efficiency in all its vehicles, and the 2013 Altima is a great example of those efforts,” said Steven Doss, general manager of Rhode Island Nissan dealership Balise Nissan of Warwick. “The best part is that the new Altima gets great fuel economy without giving up any of the performance or refinement that makes the outgoing model such a popular car with buyers.”

A big part of the 2013 Altima’s fuel economy comes from the model’s new advanced Xtronic continuously variable transmission, which provides impressive efficiency while still delivering smooth acceleration. That same train of thought also led engineers to develop an electro-hydraulic power-steering system that improves efficiency over purely hydraulic units without compromising steering feel like in most all-electric solutions.

Nissan’s hot sales numbers extended beyond the Altima last month, with overall brand sales setting a July record as well, up 12 percent year-over-year. The Nissan Sentra also saw a double-digit increase on the sales floor, selling 9,888 units for a 13-percent increase compared to July 2011. That boost in sales comes even as the next-generation 2013 Sentra is being prepared for its launch this fall.

Already planning on ways to keep up with demand for its 2013 Sentra, Nissan recently announced that it is expanding production of the compact car to its Canton, Miss. assembly plant, which also manufactures the Altima, Armada SUV, Titan pickup truck and the NV commercial vans. The production increase in the fourth quarter of this year will add 1,000 more jobs to the plant, bringing the total number of employees to more than 4,500.

“A rising tide lifts all boats, and Nissan’s success means more jobs for American workers during uncertain times,” noted Doss. “Altima buyers are drawn in by the model’s styling, performance, features and efficiency, but it’s also important to note that it’s just one of several Nissan models that are made in the USA.”
