BMW will soon be launching the latest salvo in the war for most miles per gallon: an all-new BMW 328d diesel model that will knock the Volkswagen Passat TDI out of the top spot for combined fuel economy of a non-electrified sedan. Recently rated by the EPA at 37 mpg combined city and highway, the 2014 BMW 328d luxury sport sedan houses an efficient 2.0-liter four-cylinder TwinPower Turbo Diesel engine to return 10 more miles per gallon than the last BMW 3 Series diesel model, the 2011 BMW 335d, which featured a 3.0-liter six-cylinder.
The BMW 328d receives an added boost of efficiency from its ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, which optimizes gear ratios and shift times to reduce fuel consumption as much as possible. Even with its focus on gas mileage, the 328d’s 2.0-liter diesel engine produces a healthy 180 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque to achieve a respectable 0 – 60 mph time of 7.4 seconds. An xDrive all-wheel-drive model will also be available with just a small decrease in fuel economy, returning 35 mpg combined.
“When we start selling the BMW 328d this fall, it will be the only diesel option in its luxury segment, which means its owners will have the unique opportunity to benefit from excellent efficiency while still receiving an engaging ride,” said Phil Driscoll, general manager of BMW Gallery of Norwood, a Massachusetts BMW dealer. “Not only that, but drivers will get the best gas mileage of any diesel- or gas-powered sedan on the market while enjoying way more amenities than they’d get from any other car that comes close in fuel economy.”
Advanced technology will not be limited to the powertrain of the 2014 BMW 328d, as the luxury sport sedan will be generously equipped with the latest safety and connectivity features. With automatic climate control, available Active Cruise Control and the option of BMW’s latest iDrive 4.2 navigation system featuring an integrated touch pad, owners will experience a luxurious feel inside the cabin. Buyers can also opt for a full-color Head-Up Display that projects travel information and navigation instructions directly onto the windshield for added convenience and safety.
Fans of the BMW 3 Series who want an even more responsive ride can opt for one of the gas-powered models, which provide varying combinations of power and fuel economy. The BMW 328i Sedan, for example, offers a TwinPower Turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine that produces 240 horsepower, enabling automatic models to sprint from zero to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds. Despite that brisk acceleration, the BMW 328i still nets up to 27 mpg during combined driving.
“Drivers can choose from three gas engines, and soon, a diesel powerplant, to find their ideal mix of performance and efficiency in their BMW 3 Series, and none of those options disappoint in either category,” added Driscoll. “Other automakers have struggled for a long time to match the high level of refinement that BMW delivers, and now, they’re playing catch-up with fuel economy as well.”
