In 2008, the BMW X6 went on sale as a sleeker, coupe-like alternative to the popular BMW X5 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), and this year, the smaller BMW X3 will receive a similar complement in the form of the all-new 2015 BMW X4. Slated to make its global debut at the New York International Auto Show in April, the BMW X4 Sports Activity Coupe was recently revealed in photos released by the automaker, sporting fastback styling and a more aggressive front fascia than the X3.
Though it will be offered with the same two TwinPower Turbo engines as the BMW X3, the BMW X4 will provide faster acceleration thanks to its sportier exterior design. With its 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, the BMW X4 xDrive28i will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 6 seconds flat. Meanwhile, the 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque from BMW’s 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder will allow the X4 xDrive35i to reach 60 mph from a standstill in just 5.2 seconds. Both models will come standard with an eight-speed Steptronic sport automatic transmission and the xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system when they go on sale this spring.
“BMW continues to evolve its SAVs to provide different combinations of style, performance and capability to different buyers, and the BMW X4 may offer the most fluid mix of those attributes yet,” said JR Tomkinson, general manager of Tomkinson BMW, an Indiana BMW dealer in Fort Wayne. “Drivers of the X4 will benefit from the higher sightlines and all-conditions capability of a utility vehicle, but the model’s responsiveness and exterior styling will be more comparable to a sporty coupe.”
The 2015 BMW X4 will be made at the automaker’s Spartanburg, S.C., production facility alongside the BMW X3, X5 and X6. At a recent news conference, BMW said it is prepping its U.S. factory for a potential production boost to about 350,000 units annually, up from its 300,000-unit capacity at the end of last year. Though the timing of such a move has not yet been confirmed, the decision would come as BMW aims for record global sales of 2 million units or more this year.
