The compact SUV segment has exploded in recent years, but sadly, many of its new entries are utility vehicles in name only. Land Rover will be making that market landscape more rugged with its all-new seven-passenger Discovery Sport, which will replace the LR2 when it goes on sale early next year. Unveiled earlier this month, the compact-yet-capable 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport features a sleek exterior design, including a rising beltline, a downward-sloping roofline and narrow wraparound headlamps.
Priced for mid-level luxury buyers, the 2015 Discovery Sport will boast an optional 5 + 2 seating configuration, with the third row capable of accommodating two small passengers or folding down to create more cargo space. Though it will be constructed with lightweight materials like high-strength steel, ultra high-strength boron steel and aluminum for greater agility, Land Rover’s new premium compact SUV will still provide the outstanding capability expected from the brand. The Discovery Sport will scale 45-degree gradients, offer 8.3 inches of ground clearance, and come with Terrain Response technology, which tailors the drive systems to different on- and off-road surfaces.
“The Range Rover lineup was recently revamped to become more stylish and fuel efficient without sacrificing capability, and now, Land Rover models are getting similar attention with the return of the Discovery nameplate to the United States,” said Dave Edwards, general manager of Land Rover Peabody, a Land Rover dealership in Massachusetts. “With its mix of style, versatility, capability and competitive pricing, the Discovery Sport should be a popular choice for luxury buyers who want a compact SUV that can take them to places far more remote than their kids’ soccer practices.”
Slated to share its engine with the Range Rover Evoque, the 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport will house a 240-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that will be matched to an efficient nine-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. A new multi-link rear suspension will also enhance on-road handling while improving off-road performance. Inside the cabin, drivers will benefit from a standard eight-inch touchscreen that will control a number of functions, including the available InControl Apps technology for integration with popular smartphone apps.
