2015 Ford Edge Secures Five-Star Overall Vehicle Score from NHTSA

The redesigned 2015 Ford Edge is now available with a range of driver-assist features to help prevent accidents, but should the worst happen, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has given the crossover SUV its top rating for crash protection. Rising from the 2014 model’s four-star rating, the 2015 Edge recently received a five-star Overall Vehicle Score in the NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program.

Exceling in a battery of stringent crash tests, the new Edge nabbed its overall top safety rating by earning five stars in both frontal and side protection while landing four stars in rollover protection. Ford engineers enhanced safety during the crossover’s redesign by using more high-strength steel in the body, even adding boron steel to the B-pillars. Those changes have resulted in a stiffer body structure that not only boosts crash protection, but also enables a smoother, more responsive ride.

“From performance to technology to interior materials, Ford has made the 2015 Edge better in every area, but safety was really top-of-mind for the engineers throughout the entire redesign,” said Jeff Klein, general sales manager of Thomas Ford, a Ford dealership in Beverly, Massachusetts. “Buyers can rest easy knowing that the new Edge has met some of the strictest criteria for crash protection in the industry, and if they want additional peace of mind, they can opt for new driver-assist features that breed confidence and convenience on the road.”

In addition to coming standard with a rearview camera and active glove-box knee airbag, the 2015 Edge is available with inflatable rear safety belts and active-safety technologies like adaptive cruise control, a Blind Spot Information System with cross-traffic alert and a Lane Keeping System. To help drivers avoid fender-benders while navigating parking lots and tight spaces, a newly available 180-degree front camera provides a clearer view around corners, while the enhanced active park assist can direct the Edge into perpendicular parking spots or even fully steer the vehicle during parallel parking.
