Nearly 50 years ago, a prototype 1966 Ford Mustang convertible sat atop the Empire State Building following an elaborate effort from the automaker’s engineers to elevate the car 86 floors into the New York City skyline. With the legendary pony car currently celebrating its 50th anniversary and an all-new 2015 Mustang convertible going on sale this fall, Ford has decided it is time to replicate that tall act with its latest model.
The 2015 Ford Mustang convertible has been analyzed by the automaker’s current-day engineers so that it can be separated into sections to fit into the Empire State Building’s elevators and then be reassembled on the 86th-floor observation deck. Visitors to the Empire State Building will be able to check out the Mustang convertible display car from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. on April 16 and 17 in advance of the New York International Auto Show.
“The new Mustang convertible is actually about seven inches longer and four inches wider than the 1966 model that was first used, so getting it into the Empire State Building’s elevators will still be a challenging feat, even a half century later,” said John Crowley, general manager of AutoFair Ford, a New Hampshire Ford dealer in Manchester. “Just like the Empire State Building still fits in perfectly amidst the modern New York City skyline, the new Mustang convertible is still instantly recognizable as Ford’s iconic pony car, but it also features progressive styling and some of the most advanced performance on the market.”
Donning a raised and straightened muscle line on its rear haunches and a freshly contoured trunk lid, the 2015 Ford Mustang convertible boasts a more linear overall design than its predecessor, sporting a highly athletic stance. The convertible’s roof has also undergone significant changes, now wearing a standard fabric outer layer, a 10-millimeter-thick insulation pad for a quieter ride, and a new electromechanical drive and single-handle center latch that allow it to lower in half the time of the outgoing model. Under the hood, the 2015 Mustang convertible will be available with a new 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder that is anticipated to be the most efficient engine in the muscle-car class while still churning out more than 305 horsepower.
