Muscle cars have never really been top of mind for buyers seeking superior passenger safety, but the redesigned 2015 Ford Mustang continues to defy perceptions in its segment. The latest iteration of Ford’s iconic pony car recently landed an overall 5-Star Safety Rating in the New Car Assessment Program from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Acing all crash tests to secure its overall 5-Star Safety Rating, the 2015 Mustang received individual five-star scores in the NHTSA’s frontal, side and rollover evaluations. The new Mustang features more high-strength steel for a stiffer frame, a wider range of safety-belt pretensioners and twice as many airbags and crash sensors as its predecessor. Among those airbags is a new front-passenger knee airbag, which saves space and weight by integrating into the glove-box door. To help prevent accidents in the first place, buyers can opt for active-safety technologies like adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with brake support and the Blind Spot Information System with cross-traffic alert.
“There is this perception out there that cars geared toward big-time performance somehow neglect safety in the process, but the 2015 Mustang may put that misconception to bed once and for all,” said John Crowley, general manager of AutoFair Ford, a New Hampshire Ford dealer in Manchester. “In fact, the new Mustang is also proving that a high-powered pony car can be highly fuel efficient at the same time.”
When equipped with its all-new 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, the 2015 Ford Mustang churns out 310 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque while returning a best-in-class 32 mpg on the highway with its six-speed automatic transmission. For some historical context, that new EcoBoost unit boasts more horsepower than the 2005 Mustang GT’s 4.6-liter V8 engine, which had twice as much displacement. Even in standard form, the 2015 Mustang offers an appealing mix of performance and efficiency, housing a 300-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 that nets up to 28 mpg on the highway.
