2015 Subaru Legacy and Outback Earn IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Designations

Since the debut of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS)  small-overlap front crash test in 2012, the organization’s Top Safety Pick+ designation has proven to be elusive for many new vehicles. That is not the case, however, for the redesigned 2015 Subaru Legacy and Outback, which recently laid down a blueprint of sorts for how to ace the new test, achieving the IIHS’ highest rating of “good,” and as a result, Top Safety Pick+ awards as well.

The IIHS’ small-overlap front test evaluates crash protection when 25 percent of a vehicle’s front end on the driver’s side collides with a rigid obstacle at 40 mph. Strengthened structurally for the 2015 model year, both the Subaru Legacy sedan and Subaru Outback wagon received top marks in all criteria for the test. To nab their Top Safety Pick+ designations, the vehicles also had to earn “good” ratings in the moderate-overlap front, side, roof-strength and head-restraint tests, as well as a rating of “basic” or better for front crash prevention. When equipped with their optional EyeSight driver-assist system, the 2015 Legacy and Outback were rated “superior” for averting frontal collisions.

“When a collision occurs with only a small portion of a vehicle, the damage can be pretty unpredictable, but buyers can now be fully confident that the new Legacy and Outback have all the angles covered,” said Dan Coy, general sales manager for Russel Subaru, a Baltimore Subaru dealership. “Plus, every Legacy or Outback model comes with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, so drivers are less likely to lose control on the road and have a small-overlap crash in the first place.”

As the IIHS’ highest-rated front crash prevention system, Subaru’s EyeSight technology incorporates stereo cameras to offer Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning. EyeSight-equipped Legacy and Outback models also don new Steering-Responsive Fog Lights, which automatically illuminate on either side of the vehicle to improve visibility around a bend. For protection from behind, the redesigned Subaru vehicles are now available with a Rear Vehicle Detection System that includes Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
