As part of its redesign for the 2015 model year, the Volkswagen Jetta received optional driver-assistance technologies and structural reinforcements to its A-pillars and door sills. Those changes have elevated the sedan to Top Safety Pick+ status following recent crash testing from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
To receive a coveted Top Safety Pick+ award, a vehicle must first earn the top rating of “good” in the IIHS’ moderate-overlap front, side, roof-strength and head-restraint crash tests, as well as an “acceptable” or “good” in a recently introduced small-overlap front crash evaluation. The aforementioned structural improvements to the 2015 Jetta helped the car nab a “good” rating in the small-overlap test, rising from its “marginal” rating for the 2014 model year. Top Safety Pick+ vehicles must also land at least a “basic” rating for front crash prevention, a requirement that the new Jetta met with its optional Forward Collision Warning system.
“Jetta buyers always receive the latest and greatest in safety technology, and the 2015 model not only has all the angles covered, but it can also now help prevent accidents from occurring in the first place,” said Jared Saunders, general manager of AutoFair Volkswagen of Nashua, a New Hampshire Volkswagen dealer. “Careful driving will always be the best defense against mishaps on the road, but everyone makes mistakes, and the Jetta’s new driver-assistance systems are designed to kick in before that happens.”
Incorporating radar sensors to determine the distance between the Jetta and the vehicle ahead, the Forward Collision Warning system flashes a symbol in the instrument cluster and sounds an alert if there is potential for an accident. To warn of cars coming up on the sides, the available Blind Spot Monitor system shows a symbol on the side mirrors if the sensors pick up a vehicle within approximately 65 feet alongside the Jetta. Using the same technology, the Rear Traffic Alert system releases an auditory warning if there is an impending collision coming from behind the car.
