There is driving fun, and then there is driving fun that won’t require a second mortgage on your home. That’s why Cars.com, USA Today and PBS’ MotorWeek created the Cheap Speed Challenge to determine the vehicles that provide both pleasure and practicality. In the inaugural round of tests this year, the redesigned 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI hatchback emerged as the clear victor, winning by a larger margin than the distance between any of its sequentially ranked competitors.
Eight performance-focused cars priced less than $30,000 competed in the 2014 Cheap Speed Challenge, engaging in a rigorous battery of tests that included 0-to-60-mph and quarter-mile times, 60-to-0-mph braking distances, road-course testing and real-world road testing for both fuel economy and an overall evaluation from judges. Beyond leading in mileage and braking tests while offering the most bang-for-the-buck in overall performance, the new Volkswagen Golf GTI rated highest with judges in ride quality, interior quality and comfort.
“The 2015 Golf GTI took the ‘cheap’ out of the Cheap Speed Challenge because it’s not only more powerful than the previous generation, but it has also made big leaps in fuel efficiency, in-car technology, and interior spaciousness and refinement,” said Tom Morris, general manager of Russel Volkswagen, a Volkswagen dealer in Baltimore. “Not to mention, 28 percent of the car’s new body and chassis were formed with high-strength steel, which improved handling and recently allowed the Golf GTI to earn a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the IIHS.”
Housing a 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder TSI engine, the 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI churns out 210 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, increases of 10 horsepower and 51 pound-feet compared to its predecessor. Standard fuel economy has also risen by three miles per gallon on the highway, reaching 34 mpg for the 2015 model. Inside, Volkswagen’s latest compact hot hatch provides more shoulder and elbow room, and its trunk is larger than that of any midsize sedan. Meanwhile, buyers now receive a 5.8-inch capacitive touchscreen and a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel as standard features.
