When the 2013 Cadillac ATS luxury sport sedan first went on sale last summer, its designers were confident that they had introduced a legitimate, long-overdue American competitor to the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Since then, the critics have come to agree, and the car’s latest accolade, the 2013 North American Car of the Year award, offers the most convincing evidence yet.
Determined by the votes of 49 automotive journalists in the United States and Canada, the 2013 North American Car of the Year carries special weight because it was not decided by a single publication, but rather a broader group of industry experts for presentation at the Detroit Auto Show. Cadillac’s first-ever winner of the annual award, the ATS is the lightest vehicle in its class, thanks to an all-new chassis composed of advanced materials. That safe and stable frame is put swiftly in motion with one of three engines, including a 272-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter that returns up to 30 mpg on the highway and a 3.6-liter V6 that pumps out 321 horsepower.
“When it comes to performance, the Cadillac ATS is more than evenly matched on paper with the 3 Series and C-Class, but it really pulls away with the exceptional handling and cornering that come from its rigid chassis,” said Bill DeLuca IV, vice president of Bill DeLuca’s Woodworth Chevrolet Cadillac, an Andover, MA Cadillac dealership. “Typically, sportier American cars are known more for their straight-line performance, but the ATS is winning over critics and customers in the corners. That must be a real eye-opener for the engineers at BMW and Mercedes-Benz.”
While the ATS was receiving its award, another forward-looking Cadillac, the ELR, was taking the stage. With a pair of electric motors, a lithium-ion battery and a gas generator, the 2014 Cadillac ELR, the automaker’s first extended-range electric vehicle, will offer efficient performance when it goes on sale early next year, outputting a combined 207 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Cadillac estimates that the luxury coupe will be able to go about 35 miles on electricity alone, with a total range of more than 300 miles.
As the first extended-range electric vehicle from a full-line luxury auto brand, the Cadillac ELR won’t be lacking in sleek styling or premium amenities, either. Outside, the ELR’s design lines remain nearly unchanged from the forward-leaning shape of the acclaimed Converj Concept on which it is based, including the dramatically sloping greenhouse and large 20-inch wheels. Meanwhile, comfort and connectivity are the focal points inside the cabin, with leather trim and chrome accents creating an inviting environment in which to enjoy the standard Cadillac CUE infotainment system.
“If there were any lingering doubts about whether Cadillac could modernize its brand, the ATS and ELR should put them to rest for good,” added DeLuca. “The Cadillac ATS has been attracting a wave of new customers to our dealership with its bold performance, and the ELR will appeal to yet another cross-section of luxury buyers with its smart and sustainable comfort.”
