Aggressively Styled 2016 Mazda2 Debuts in Japan

While most automakers tend to tone down the design lines of a concept vehicle before it reaches production, Mazda continues to bring new models to market that are nearly identical to their aggressive auto-show forebears. The latest example is the redesigned 2016 Mazda2 subcompact, which made its global debut in Japan last week and closely resembles the HAZUMI concept revealed at the Geneva Auto Show in March.

Donning Mazda’s family pentagonal grille and slanted, swept-back headlights, the 2016 Mazda2 adheres to the automaker’s KODO, or Soul of Motion, design language, with flowing lines making their way toward the rear of the car. Like Mazda’s other new or recently redesigned vehicles, including the Mazda CX-5, Mazda3 and Mazda6, the new Mazda2 will receive the full suite of fuel-saving SKYACTIV technologies, which encompass the engine, transmission, body and chassis. The 2016 Mazda2 will arrive at U.S. dealerships in 2015.

“Other automakers feel like they need to play it safe and appeal to the lowest common denominator when styling their vehicles, but Mazda wants to communicate the fun of driving on every exterior,” said Barry Chew, sales manager of Mastria Mazda, a Greater Boston Mazda dealer. “The 2016 Mazda2 looks to be another successful execution of the brand’s bold KODO styling, and drivers will certainly get a responsive and fuel-efficient ride with the implementation of the new SKYACTIV technologies.”

The unveiling of the 2016 Mazda2 isn’t the brand’s only new-vehicle debut this summer, as the highly anticipated fourth generation of the Mazda MX-5 Miata roadster will be revealed on Sept. 3 at an exclusive event in Monterey, Calif. Though Mazda has been tightlipped about the next iteration of the best-selling two-door convertible sports car of all time, it displayed the all-new SKYACTIV-CHASSIS of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata at the New York International Auto Show in April. Expected to be more than 220 pounds lighter than its predecessor, the SKYACTIV-CHASSIS will give the MX-5 Miata its lowest center of gravity yet while continuing to provide a high level of body rigidity.
