All-New Lexus NX Lands IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Designation

Stylistically, the all-new Lexus NX features one of the most daring designs in its segment, but when it comes to safety, the luxury compact crossover doesn’t take any chances. On the market for about a month now, the 2015 NX has already earned a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the organization’s highest honor for crash protection and prevention.

The road to a Top Safety Pick+ begins with the requirements for the basic Top Safety Pick designation, including a top rating of “good” in the IIHS’ moderate-overlap front, side, roof-strength and head-restraint crash tests, as well as an “acceptable” or “good” rating in the small-overlap front crash test. In order to rise to Top Safety Pick+ status, a vehicle must then receive an “advanced” or “superior” rating for front crash prevention. The 2015 Lexus NX obtained “good” ratings across the board in the crash-protection tests while securing an “advanced” rating in front crash prevention when equipped with its optional Pre-Collision System (PCS).

“Though it appeals to the hearts of luxury buyers with its aggressive spindle grille and responsive turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the Lexus NX still offers complete peace of mind when things get dicey on the road,” said Vincent Liuzzi, general manager of Lexus of Watertown, a Massachusetts Lexus dealer. “The new crossover is not only built to protect passengers from all angles during a collision, but it can also be equipped with active-safety systems to help prevent accidents from ever happening in the first place.”

Using radar technology, Lexus’ PCS can detect imminent frontal collisions and then proactively tighten the front seat belts and engage Brake Assist for increased braking pressure. During everyday driving, the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control leverages the same technology to reduce the throttle and apply the brakes if the system senses that the Lexus NX is gaining too much ground on the vehicle ahead. Along the sides of the NX, the optional Lane Departure Alert can monitor lane markings with a camera to warn drivers if they start to drift, while an available Blind Spot Monitor can alert them to vehicles in the adjacent lanes.
