Car buyers are always looking for a great value when purchasing their next ride, but they don’t want those cost savings to come at the cost of safety. That is why the Center for Auto Safety has outlined its Best Bets in The Car Book for the past 34 years, honoring the vehicles that provide high overall value while also holding their own in crash protection and prevention. This year, two Hyundai models were dubbed Best Bests, including the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport and the 2014 Hyundai Sonata.
The Center for Auto Safety determined The Car Book Best Bets by first rating vehicles in nine categories, including combined crash rating, safety features, rollover, preventive maintenance, warranty, fuel economy, repair costs, complaints and insurance costs. Each model was then given a composite score, with the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport rating among the best in the Mid-Size SUV category and the Hyundai Sonata excelling in the Intermediate car segment for the fourth straight year. Both the 2014 Santa Fe Sport and Sonata have earned a 5-Star Safety Rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in its New Car Assessment Program.
“Buyers know by now that they’ll get a great mix of driving fun and fuel economy in the Sonata without sacrificing safety in the process, and The Car Book continues to recognize that year after year,” said Chris Assmar, general manager of South Shore Hyundai, a Long Island Hyundai dealer in Valley Stream, N.Y. “Meanwhile, the Santa Fe Sport debuted for the 2013 model year as a smaller, more fuel-efficient version of the Santa Fe, and drivers have quickly taken to its affordable versatility and style.”
Offering the same responsive-yet-efficient engines as the Sonata, the five-passenger 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport comes standard with a 2.4-liter GDI four-cylinder that produces 190 horsepower while returning up to 27 mpg on the highway. Buyers can also upgrade to a 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbo GDI four-cylinder that churns out 264 horsepower while netting the same highway mileage as the base engine. For the 2014 model year, the Santa Fe Sport received new optional active-safety technologies like blind-spot detection and a rear-parking assistance system, as well as newly available comfort features like ventilated front seats and rear side-window sunshades.
