BMW’s Refreshed 2013 7 Series Heats Up Competition with Rivals

With Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus all planning new or updated versions of their flagship sedans during the next year, BMW is looking to get ahead of the game with its refreshed 2013 7 Series. Aimed at providing more power and efficiency before the luxury automaker’s standard bearer receives a major redesign in 2015, the changes to the newest BMW 7 Series span all trims.

When they arrive at dealerships later this summer, every 2013 BMW 7 Series model will feature improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, thanks to a new eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission and auto stop-start technology. Meanwhile, 740i and 740Li models will house a revised 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-six engine, which has combined with the new transmission to improve fuel economy by roughly 20 percent on the European cycle. Even with that added efficiency, the powerplant will still deliver the same 315 horsepower it produces in 2012 models.

“BMW continues to find new ways to improve fuel efficiency while elevating performance, and those changes are evident everywhere you look in the latest 7 Series,” said Phil Driscoll, general manager of BMW Gallery of Norwood, a Massachusetts BMW dealer. “The 7 Series has long been the standard by which other luxury sedans are measured by, and BMW’s improvements to each successive model show they’re determined to stay ahead of the pack.”

Updated with a new Valvetronic throttle-less intake system, the 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V8 found in the 2013 BMW 750i and 750Li now churns out 445 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque, increases of 45 horsepower and 30 pound-feet of torque compared to its predecessor. Still, with BMW’s other efficiency-related improvements, the models have been found to reduce fuel consumption by up to 25 percent in European testing.

BMW’s efforts to blur the line between power and efficiency are even more prominent in its updated 2013 ActiveHybrid 7. The latest version of the gas-electric 7 Series drops the prior model’s V8 engine, instead using the same six-cylinder unit in the new 740i and 740Li. A boost from the 55-horsepower electric motor brings combined output to an impressive 349 horsepower, but the new BMW ActiveHybrid 7 has still proven to be 14 percent more fuel efficient than the 2013 740Li in Europe.

Twenty models of another BMW hybrid, the ActiveHybrid 5, are part of the automaker’s extensive fuel-efficient fleet currently being used in the London 2012 Olympics. BMW is the Official Automotive Partner of this year’s Olympic Games, and Greater Boston BMW fans can support Team USA by test-driving an all-new BMW 3 Series at BMW of Norwood on Aug. 10. For every participant in its Drive for Team USA events, BMW will make a donation to the U.S. Olympic team.

“Team USA and the new 3 Series are a perfect match because they both offer the highest level of performance in their fields,” added Driscoll. “The BMW Drive for Team USA event lets drivers see the 3 Series’ superiority for themselves by testing it directly against the competition, all while supporting future American athletes.”
