Bolder, Smarter 2016 Toyota Tacoma Debuts in Detroit

With the launch of the new Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon late last year, it looked like the Toyota Tacoma could be facing legitimate competition in its segment for the first time in years. However, those threats to the best-selling midsize pickup truck may now prove to be short-lived, as a redesigned 2016 Tacoma debuted at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this month with a bolder exterior, new drivetrains and a more refined cabin featuring smart technology.

Up front, the all-new 2016 Toyota Tacoma sports a new hexagonal grille, rigid fender flares, a taller and more sculpted hood and narrower headlamps that can be complemented by available LED daytime running lights. The truck also means business underneath that aggressively styled sheet metal, featuring more high-strength steel in its frame for increased rigidity and a revised suspension that creates a smoother on-road ride and greater off-roading capability.

Under its chiseled hood, the Tacoma’s optional 4.0-liter V6 engine will be replaced by a smaller-displacement 3.5-liter Atkinson-cycle V6 that will be more powerful and more fuel efficient, and the new unit will be offered with the choice of a new six-speed automatic transmission or a new six-speed manual gearbox. The carryover 2.7-liter four-cylinder will remain the standard engine in the 2016 Tacoma, sold only with the six-speed automatic when the truck goes on sale this fall.

“The Tacoma has been the best-seller in its segment for the past decade because it perfectly blends capability with outstanding reliability and value. The new 2016 model will build on all of those things while introducing fresh styling and a more accommodating cabin,” said Jeff Leclerc, general sales manager of Central Maine Toyota, a Toyota dealership in Waterville, Maine. “While it may look and feel rugged on the outside and under the hood, the new Tacoma is designed to be extremely comfortable and convenient for drivers and passengers alike.”

To eliminate road noise and rattling, Toyota outfitted the 2016 Tacoma with tighter door sealing, a multi-layer acoustic windshield, a floor silencer pad and a sound-absorbing headliner. Meanwhile, the modern design of the handlebar-styled instrument panel, soft-wrapped trim and metallic accents will be paired with technology options like a smart key with push-button start, a Qi wireless charger, an upgraded touchscreen audio system and a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Adventurous drivers will also be pleased to find a standard GoPro mount near the rearview mirror, particularly those looking to film their exploits in the highly capable Tacoma TRD Off-Road model.
