Capitol Care’s 1st Annual Health and Wellness Fair Boasts Success

11/21/2011 // Stanhope, NJ, USA // chellefrancis // Capitol Care

Capitol Care, Inc., a behavioral health care provider, collaborated with community care providers and business vendors to host the First Annual Health and Wellness Fair on October 19, 2011. The event was open to the public at no cost to attendees.

Care providers included the American Cancer Society, the Red Cross, the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the American Heart Association, among others. Capitol Care staff helped run health-related stands including blood pressure checks, smoothies, body mass index tests and information on Alcoholics Anonymous. More than 100 participants attended the event. In addition to gaining access to health screenings, community members had a chance to win prizes if they visited all the participants. Winners received valuable prizes including a bike, hygiene baskets, free yoga lessons and a smoothie maker.

“The success of our first wellness fair is a sign that not only are events like this needed by community members seeking health information and treatments, but serves as an optimistic start to the development of a whole-body wellness movement agency-wide,” said Tina Cooke, chief executive officer at Capitol Care, Inc.

The idea for the event came after Capitol Care staff members Erin Daly and Jodi McCarthy completed a 12-week wellness course through the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. After learning alarming statistics about individuals who suffer from mental health illnesses and their limited access to resources for treatment, the organization decided to launch the first wellness fair to increase awareness about the importance of healthy lifestyles.
