For many car buyers, a great value doesn’t mean sacrificing key features for the cheapest price, but rather finding the biggest bang for their buck. In the competitive compact-sedan segment, there are several amenities that motorists prize more than the absolute lowest price tag. Cars.com recently evaluated 11 compact sedans with six key features that are important to buyers, with the 2013 Nissan Sentra coming out on top as the most affordable overall.
Each of the models tested by Cars.com was equipped with an automatic transmission, cruise control, a USB input, remote entry, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and steering-wheel audio controls. The Sentra was tested in the SV trim with the optional Driver’s Package, putting its starting cost at just over $19,000. With the lowest estimated five-year fuel costs of all cars tested, the Nissan compact nabbed the top spot for overall affordability, with $730 separating it from the next closest competitor.
“If drivers are concerned about the future of fuel prices but don’t want to give up modern features that make driving fun, the Sentra is a great option,” said Steven Doss, general manager of Rhode Island Nissan dealership Balise Nissan of Warwick. “Value doesn’t mean getting the cheapest thing out there, it means getting everything you need at a low price, and with excellent fuel economy and new technology, the Sentra definitely delivers.”
Redesigned for the 2013 model year, the Nissan Sentra dropped 150 pounds and received a new 1.8-liter engine, boosting its fuel economy to 39 mpg on the highway. Aesthetic changes included a new grille and a more streamlined silhouette reminiscent of the larger Nissan Altima. Inside, nearly three additional inches of rear legroom and available soft-touch materials give the Sentra a premium feel, while optional technologies like Bluetooth compatibility and the NissanConnect infotainment system keep drivers connected on the go.
Buyers seem to be responding to the Sentra’s redesign, with April sales of the car up by 45 percent over the same month last year, totaling 10,734 units. Year-to-date, Nissan has sold 43,736 Sentra models, a 12 percent increase year-over-year.
“People might come in to test-drive the Sentra just because of its affordability, but when they actually see what they get for the money, they’re always impressed,” added Doss. “It’s a sedan that has plenty of style and features to keep drivers comfortable and connected, and the recent redesign has made it even better for motorists who know the value of a dollar.”
