Chevy launched its Sonic subcompact in 2011 as part of a concerted effort to attract young U.S. buyers, and for the 2014 model year the auto brand will double down on its appeal to Generation Y with two new Sonic sedans. Unveiled at the LA Auto Show last month, the performance-focused 2014 Chevy Sonic RS and boldly styled 2014 Chevy Sonic Dusk will arrive at dealerships next spring.
Slated to join the Sonic RS hatchback, the 2014 Sonic RS sedan offers a responsive feel with its sport-tuned suspension, a lower ride height and either special gearing in a six-speed manual transmission or a 3.53 final drive ratio in a six-speed automatic gearbox. The model matches its engaging ride with a sportier exterior, donning a unique front fascia with a deep air dam and vertical intakes on the edges. Inside, the new Sonic RS sedan boasts aluminum sport pedals, a sport three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather-appointed front bucket seats with red RS accents.
“Younger drivers continue to turn to smaller cars for affordability, fuel efficiency and overall practicality, but they don’t want to sacrifice style and driving fun in the process,” said Bo Hendrick, general sales manager of Waterville, Maine Chevy dealer Central Maine Motors. “The new RS and Dusk sedans build on the strengths of the existing Sonic lineup by offering expressive designs that allow buyers to enjoy their commute while turning a few heads at the same time.”
Inspired by the concept car of the same name from the 2011 SEMA Show, the Chevy Sonic Dusk is distinguished by an Ashen Grey Metallic paintjob, 18-inch Midnight Silver aluminum wheels, a ground effects package, four-wheel disc brakes and a rear spoiler. Meanwhile, buyers will be treated to a refined cabin with Jet Black leather-trimmed seats accented by Mohave tan inserts and sueded microfiber.
Both the 2014 Sonic Dusk and Sonic RS sedans are outfitted with a 1.4-liter turbocharged Ecotec four-cylinder engine that will return up to 40 mpg on the highway in the Dusk and up to 34 mpg on the highway in the sportier RS.
