Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) refers to the use of software and computer-controlled machinery to automate a manufacturing process and to make it less time-consuming and efficient. Its primary objective is to create a faster manufacturing process and components and tooling with more precise dimensions and consistency in materials. Three components are required for the CAM system to function firstly a software that tells a machine how to make a product, secondly machinery that receives the command and can turn raw material into a product, and lastly post-processing that converts toolpaths into a language that the machine can understand. CAM is widely used around the world but still has many places to grow. CAM generally falls into two types reductive and additive. Reductive processes involve getting rid of materials and additive processes involve the addition of materials. Computer-aided manufacturing is often linked with CAD for more enhanced manufacturing.
