Each year the Voice Awards recognize TV and film writers and producers who have given a voice to people with behavioral health problems by incorporating dignified, respectful, and accurate portrayals of these individuals into their scripts, programs, and productions.
One of the nominees for the 2012 Voice Awards is the groundbreaking documentary film “Curing Addiction“, which includes interviews with treatment professionals and former substance abusers who seek to help others permanently end the cycle of addiction. The key focus is on assisting former addicts to be able to move on in life and not get stuck with labels, continue to relapse, take unnecessary drugs as forms of treatment or believe they are afflicted with an incurable disease if they really are not.
“I was absolutely thrilled when I found out it was nominated,” comments Lucas Catton, the producer of the film. “I believe the messages in the film can help save our country a lot of money in how the treatment system is set up, and most importantly help save even more lives from being caught in the seemingly bottomless pit of addiction.”
Catton says the project is a combination of two of his passions – being an advocate for addiction recovery as well as communicating ideas through television and film. Among other things, he is currently writing scripts for two television show pilots and three feature films that he hopes can someday get produced as well.
This film has many applications for use. Not only is it informative on a personal level for individuals and family members, but it is also being used for discussion in health-related classes and as an educational tool for drug-free workplace programs.
The Voice Awards are sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and Center for Mental Health Services. According to the site for the Awards, “These dedicated, insightful, and influential professionals have helped change how TV and film viewers understand mental health and substance use disorders and accept people with behavioral health problems.”
Past documentaries that have been honored by Voice Awards include films co-produced by notable names such as James Gandolfini, Spike Lee, Joe Pantoliano and David Letterman.
