Carrie D. Wilson, CFP, CDFA, a Dallas based financial planner, recently attended a national conference for the Institute of Divorce Financial Analysts. The IDFA is the credentialing agency for Certified Divorce Financial Analysts in the United States and Canada. The conference included three days of lectures and round table discussions focused on financial issues and strategies in divorce.
“As a financial planner with an expertise in divorce financial issues”, Wilson said, “it is imperative that I stay informed on the current challenges my clients are facing as they make permanent financial decisions during their divorce. Additionally, understanding future trends in family law can better prepare me to assist my clients and their legal team as they navigate multiple scenarios and options during the divorce proceedings.”
Sponsored by the IDFA, the recent national conference offered presentations by experts on topics including ‘Debt & Divorce’, ‘Forensic Business Valuation’, and ‘Gray Divorce: Unique Issues and Settlements in Long-Term Marriages’. According to Wilson, the conference provided focused time for divorce planners to gain an understanding of complex issues facing attorneys and their clients. “Much of my work as a CDFA is in supporting attorneys as they manage cases with complex financial assets. Additionally, educating clients on the decisions they are making during this emotional time can be key to their financial independence post-divorce. Continuing to enhance my understanding of these topics is imperative in helping both the attorneys and their clients.”
Attending her fifth national conference, Wilson noted that the topics presented by the experts change every year which reinforces the importance of using a financial professional during the largest financial transaction a couple will typically ever make.
