Toyota’s new TRD Pro Series off-road packages went on sale this fall for the 2015 Tundra, Tacoma and 4Runner, and this week the automaker is showcasing their full potential at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Heading up the rugged display is the modified 2015 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro Desert Race Truck, which is scheduled to compete in the 47th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 endurance race in Mexico later this month.
Based largely on the production 2015 Tundra TRD Pro CrewMax 4×4, Toyota’s desert race truck features only minor modifications for the Baja 1000, including a custom TRD cat-back exhaust, larger 37-inch BF Goodrich off-road tires and a Herbst Smith Fabrication tube roll cage. Also included are Mastercraft race seats and harnesses, a custom Fuel Safe fuel cell and a full complement of Hella lighting up front. Meanwhile, every buyer of the 2015 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro receives a TRD suspension with tuned front springs and remote-reservoir Bilstein front and rear shocks, as well as a quarter-inch aluminum skid plate and a rowdy TRD-tuned dual-exhaust for the truck’s 381-horsepower 5.7-liter V8 engine.
“Toyota has been offering off-road parts and accessories from its in-house TRD tuning shop for many years, but the new TRD Pro Series packages are the most rugged and race-ready yet,” said Jeff Leclerc, general sales manager of Central Maine Toyota, a Toyota dealership in Waterville, Maine. “The lightly modified Tundra TRD Pro Desert Race Truck will soon display that go-anywhere performance in the Baja 1000, and now buyers have most of that incredible capability at their disposal right off of the dealership lot.”
The Tundra desert race truck won’t be the only example of the TRD Pro Series in the Baja 1000, as three Toyota chase trucks will join the adventure after their showcase at SEMA Show. Outfitted by off-road fabricator N-Fab, the 2015 TRD 4Runner, TRD Tacoma and another TRD Tundra will sport TRD suspensions, off-road tires and wheels while housing DC Safety off-road emergency kits, small coolers with holders, RCI chase radios and a variety of off-road utility equipment from Rigid Industries and Smittybilt.
