As a groundbreaking plug-in hybrid sports car made with carbon fiber, the BMW i8 has generated quite a bit of interest in the months leading up to its launch, and its initial deliveries certainly reflected that buzz in upscale circles. Greeting their new owners at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in Carmel, Calif., earlier this month, the first BMW i8 models went to a collection of prominent CEOs, chairmen and company founders.
BMW has positioned its i8 as the future of sustainable-yet-sporty mobility, and two major leaders in the automotive industry seem to agree. Among the first to land BMW i8s were Roger Penske, chairman of Penske Corporation and Penske Automotive Group, and Rick Hendrick, chairman of Hendrick Automotive Group, who both field race teams in the NASCAR and IndyCar series. For a handful of BMW i8 owners, the new-car smell was complemented by a sumptuous meal at the BMW Villa prepared by famous chef Thomas Keller, who also took home one of the plug-in hybrid sports cars.
“The new high-profile owners of the BMW i8 recognize that the future of luxury motoring — and really, elegance in general — will come in a much smarter package, and they want to be at the forefront of that movement,” said Marshal Cabot, general manager of BMW of Peabody, a Greater Boston BMW dealer. “The BMW i8 rivals some of the top sports cars on the market when it comes to performance, yet it’s built with sustainable materials and releases far fewer CO2 emissions into our environment.”
After the first BMW i8 deliveries were made, former “The Tonight Show” host and car enthusiast Jay Leno was present to auction off a one-of-a-kind 2014 BMW i8 Concours d’Elegance Edition for $825,000, with the proceeds benefiting the Pebble Beach Company Foundation and the Concours d’Elegance. The BMW i8 will be available to the general public starting this fall, offering luxury buyers a 76 MPGe rating while sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. Total system output for the vehicle’s 1.5-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder engine and electric motor is 357 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque.
