Green Revolution Cooling Partners with Supermicro on Large-Scale Geophysical Processing Cluster

CarnotJet™ System with Supermicro(R) Servers Accelerates Large-Scale Seismic Data Processing Project at CGGVeritas

/ Green Revolution Cooling (GRC) today announced details surrounding its largest ongoing installation to date, a twenty-four rack, 600kW CarnotJet™ system at CGGVeritas, the leading pure-play geophysical company.

The CarnotJet™ system, developed by GRC, is a complete, energy-efficient fluid submersion cooling system for OEM servers. Utilizing high-performance GreenDEF™ dielectric coolant, the CarnotJet™ system provides the most efficient cooling and lowest cost per watt in the industry, reducing total solution energy consumption by 95%. With 1,200 times more heat retention than air, GreenDEF™ can very effectively cool servers at 40°C (104°F) and virtually eliminate air conditioning costs which typically require ambient temperature at 24°C (75°F). Additional energy savings are also possible with repurposing of heat captured in the CarnotJet™ submersion rack system.

HPC server solutions optimized for geophysical applications in the CGGVeritas deployment are provided by Super Micro Computer, Inc. (Supermicro(R)), a global leader in high-performance, high-efficiency green server innovation. Supermicro’s 1U dual-GPU SuperServer(R) (SYS-1026GT-TF) was chosen for its high-density computing power and overall capacity to maximize performance and energy-efficiency in the fluid-cooled racks.

Laurent Clerc, Vice President of Information Technology, Processing, Imaging & Reservoir at CGGVeritas, said: “Working with GRC and Supermicro has been a very rewarding experience, not only because of their innovative products and performance, but also because of the level of cooperation between our companies and the flexibility each has exhibited with quick response time and implementation of our project.”

“Supermicro is the leading provider of GPU-accelerated HPC solutions and the natural synergy between our organizations has created a scalable and sustainable high-efficiency supercomputing platform, optimized for applied geophysics,” said Dr. Tau Leng, General Manager of HPC at Super Micro Computer, Inc. “In conjunction with GRC’s submersion technology we are able to push operational limits of our GPU-based SuperServers even further while effectively reducing overall energy requirements. This joint solution delivers CGGVeritas supercomputing performance with enhanced PUE for their unique data acquisition and analysis applications.”

Christiaan Best, Technical Founder of Green Revolution Cooling, said: “The CarnotJet™ system has enabled CGGVeritas to implement a tremendously powerful GPU-accelerated cluster at a very attractive cost. We’re pleased that Supermicro has provided submersion-ready servers that perform extremely well in the system. We look forward to the continued expansion of the submersion cooling data center at CGGVeritas.”

Each 42U CarnotJet™ rack contains 40 Supermicro GPU SuperServers with 41K GPU cores. Utilizing GRC and Supermicro technology, CGGVeritas has reduced data center cooling costs by 40% while exhibiting a PUE (power usage effectiveness) of 1.12. In addition to the energy savings, CGGVeritas is benefiting from reduced TCO (total cost of ownership) with minimized support and infrastructure dependencies. This technology enables CGGVeritas to dramatically accelerate data-intensive seismic survey analysis with an extremely dense and high-efficiency supercomputing platform.
