Last December, production of the redesigned 2014 Toyota Highlander began at the Toyota Indiana plant, eventually resulting in sales of about 90,000 models through July of this year. That is a 16 percent sales increase compared to the same period in 2013, and as a result, Toyota recently announced that it will be hiring 300 more workers and investing $100 million at its facility near Princeton, Ind., to accommodate elevated demand for the SUV.
Toyota’s new hires will be made by the summer of 2016 as production of the Highlander expands from its current assembly line at Toyota Indiana’s West Plant to the East Plant as well, where up to 30,000 additional units of the SUV will be manufactured annually. The automaker’s latest expansion brings its overall investment in Toyota Indiana to $4 billion since the factory’s groundbreaking in 1996.
“While redesigning its Highlander, Toyota listened closely to what modern American buyers want in an SUV, and now that the model is proving popular, more American workers will have stable jobs,” said Chris Lark, general manager of Russel Toyota, a Baltimore Toyota dealer. “Whether it’s the bolder exterior, the more refined and well-equipped cabin, or the improved fuel efficiency, the new Toyota Highlander doesn’t skimp on the spec sheet when it comes to material quality and technology.”
The now-eight-passenger Toyota Highlander features a more angular and more aerodynamic exterior that is accentuated by a redesigned trapezoidal grille, large wraparound headlights and flared fenders. Inside, buyers will find more soft-touch materials and a newly designed LCD in-meter-cluster Multi-Information Display in either 3.5-inch black and white or 4.2-inch color. The addition of a new six-speed automatic transmission has boosted the fuel economy of gas-only V6 models, while the all-new Toyota Highlander Hybrid pairs a 3.5-liter V6 gas engine with a high-torque electric motor to produce a total system output of 280 horsepower and return 28 mpg in combined city and highway driving.
