Many cars that deliver thrills on the road can also carry a reputation for accumulating bills in the repair shop. That is apparently not the case, however, for the MINI Cooper, which topped the Compact Sporty Car segment in the recently released 2014 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) from J.D. Power and Associates.
Surveying more than 41,000 original owners of 2011-model-year vehicles for its 2014 VDS, J.D. Power identified the average number of problems that each model experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100) during the past 12 months. Participants were asked about 202 potential problem areas in their vehicle between October and December of 2013. With the lowest PP100 score in its segment, the 2011 MINI Cooper emerged victorious among compact sporty cars, besting competitors like the 2011 Volkswagen GTI.
“While most buyers are likely drawn to the MINI Cooper for its unmistakable style and responsive ride, this J.D. Power study will give them peace of mind because they know they’ll spend the overwhelming majority of their time with the car out on the road, not at the dealership for repairs,” said Gary King, general manager of MINI of Peabody, a Greater Boston MINI dealer. “We also expect that the MINI Cooper’s dependability and overall driving fun will be at all-time highs when the redesigned Hardtop model goes on sale later this month.”
Coming standard with an all-new TwinPower Turbo 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine, the 2014 MINI Hardtop will produce 134 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, increases of 13 horsepower and an impressive 48 pound-feet of torque over the larger four-cylinder in the outgoing base model. Meanwhile, drivers of the new MINI Cooper S will benefit from a TwinPower Turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder that churns out 189 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque, allowing a sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.5 seconds with the standard six-speed manual gearbox.
Outside, the new 2014 MINI Cooper is longer, wider and slightly taller than its predecessor, creating a more aggressive stance that can be complemented by newly available circular LED headlamps. Buyers can also now opt for new in-car technologies, including the MINI Head-Up Display, which safely shows relevant information and alerts on an extendable monitor, as well as the Driving Assistant system, which includes camera-based cruise control and a distance-control function.
