Jeep Ventures into Small-SUV Segment with Its 2015 Renegade

With last October’s market launch of the aggressively styled 2014 Jeep Cherokee midsize SUV, it appeared as if the Jeep lineup might be heading into uncharted design territory, but the brand’s next new vehicle will instead introduce Jeep’s classic styling cues to the small-SUV segment. The 2015 Jeep Renegade rides on an all-new small-wide 4X4 architecture and offers an available nine-speed automatic transmission for added fuel efficiency, but it looks very much like a smaller sibling of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler, donning the brand’s traditional seven-slot grille and circular headlights.

Jeep’s first small SUV won’t be lacking in capability, either, as it will be available with a choice of two all-new four-wheel-drive systems, but the Renegade will also boast segment-first features like a disconnecting rear axle and a power take-off unit to optimize fuel economy. When the Jeep Renegade goes on sale in the United States either late this year or in early 2015, engine choices are expected to be a 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo four-cylinder producing 160 horsepower and a 184-horsepower 2.4-liter Tigershark MultiAir 2 four-cylinder. Off-road enthusiasts looking for a downsized ride will want to check out the Renegade Trailhawk, which will feature rugged upgrades like the standard Jeep Active Drive Low with a 20:1 crawl ratio, a Selec-Terrain system with an exclusive Rock mode, 0.8 inches of increased ride height, skid plates, and red front and rear tow hooks.

“Whether it’s the available My Sky systems that enable open-air fun like in the Wrangler or the breadth of off-roading equipment, the Renegade takes the best of what the Jeep brand has to offer and brings it to the small-SUV segment,” said Tom Barenboim, owner of Clark Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, a Methuen, Massachusetts Jeep dealer. “Though they can both provide leading capability in their respective segments, the Renegade and Cherokee are designed to lure new buyers to the brand from two different directions, with the Cherokee attracting those looking for a sleeker ride and the Renegade winning over those who have always admired the Jeep brand but need something a bit smaller.”

Like the Jeep Cherokee, the 2015 Jeep Renegade will be available with the latest in-car technologies, including the Uconnect Access infotainment system and active-safety features like Forward Collision Warning-Plus, LaneSense Departure Warning-Plus, Blind-spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path detection. Jeep hopes the Renegade can follow in the tracks of the Cherokee at U.S. dealerships, as the midsize SUV put in another impressive sales performance last month. Moving 11,795 units in February, the Cherokee sold 12 percent more models than it did in January.
