Though many new compact crossover SUVs tend to favor fuel efficiency over capability, the winner of the KBB.com 5-Year Cost to Own Award in that fast-growing segment offers a potent mix of both. Honored by Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com for the second straight year, the Jeep Patriot again topped the Compact SUV/Crossover category with the lowest cost of ownership during the first five years after purchase.
In addition to factoring in Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price and projected depreciation, the 2014 KBB.com 5-Year Cost to Own Awards were determined by a comprehensive list of ongoing financial considerations, including financing, fuel costs, insurance, state fees, repairs and scheduled maintenance. Helping the 2014 Jeep Patriot win its category was its low starting price of around $16,000 and the strong resale value of the Jeep brand. While the Patriot returns up to 30 mpg on the highway with front-wheel drive, the compact SUV shows surprising off-road prowess with its optional Freedom Drive II four-wheel-drive package, which features upgrades like a brake lock differential, skid plates and Hill Descent Control.
“If you tried to go off-road with any other vehicle priced like the Jeep Patriot, you probably wouldn’t make it very far before doing some damage,” said Scott Pinnette, general manager of Central Maine Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, a dealer of Jeep models and other new and used cars in Maine. “Though most buyers will stay on the roads with their Patriot, they know the SUV has the signature Jeep capability in its DNA when conditions get bad, and that helps the vehicle maintain its value in the long run.”
The Jeep Patriot’s affordable capability continues to draw new buyers into dealerships, with the compact SUV setting a January sales record in the United States last month. More than 5,500 new Patriot models found new homes in January, a 6 percent sales increase compared to the same month in 2012. The Patriot’s impressive tally helped the overall Jeep brand reach its best-ever January mark as well, with 41,910 units sold for a 38 percent boost year-over-year.
