Measuring the true cost to own a vehicle goes well beyond just the original MSRP; ongoing costs from fuel to repair and maintenance expenditures play a role as well. In terms of the initial five years of ownership, no automaker represents a better value than the new 2014 Mazda lineup, according to KBB.com, which named Mazda the top overall brand in the latest installment of its 5-Year Cost to Own Awards. The KBB.com analysts also found the 2014 Mazda3 sedan and hatchback, Mazda6 sedan, Mazda CX-5 compact SUV and Mazda Miata MX-5 convertible to be instrumental in helping the automaker earn the title.
Kelley Blue Book determined the winners by measuring the holistic cost of owning a vehicle for the first five years, beginning with the initial purchase price. After that, everything from financing and insurance costs all the way to fuel prices, state fees and repairs and maintenance costs were taken into consideration. KBB.com analyzed every vehicle — right down to specific trims for each vehicle — before handing out the awards. Mazda was able to earn the designation as the top brand largely because its models are “fuel-efficient, reliable and offer strong resale value.”
“Mazda may have built its reputation on offering cars that are fun to drive, but they provide just as much in terms of value,” said Danny Legge, president of Brown’s Car Stores. “No one wants to be forced into buying an affordable vehicle at the expense of buying a reliable one — or vice versa — and with Mazda you won’t have to. You’ll get that same combination with Toyota, Honda and Hyundai vehicles as well.”
Toyota was also well represented in the 5-Year Cost to Own Awards, with three models winning in their respective categories. KBB.com found the 2014 Toyota Corolla to be the Best Compact Car, the Tacoma Regular Cab to be the Best Mid-Size Pickup and the Prius c to be the Best Hybrid/Alternative Energy Car. The 2014 Hyundai Veloster Turbo took home the title for being the Best Sporty Compact Car, while the 2014 Honda Accord added the Best Midsize Car award to its already stacked resume.
