In the automotive industry, the word “green” typically evokes fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness, but not usually a whole lot of fun. To the contrary, the 2013 Ford C-MAX Energi and Focus Electric were each recently named to KBB.com’s 10 Best Green Cars of 2013 because they can actually be fun to drive while saving their owners money at the pump.
In addition to praising its fun factor and its position as the most affordable plug-in hybrid on the market, Kelley Blue Book editors lauded the new C-MAX Energi for its all-electric range of 21 miles and its 100 MPGe rating during combined city and highway driving. Meanwhile, the Focus Electric landed on the 10 Best Green Cars list because of its versatile hatchback, useful features and an advanced gas-free drivetrain that is efficient yet responsive.
“As hybrids have become more mainstream, Ford has taken a leadership position with alternative drivetrains that are offered with the same modern styling and options as gas-only models,” said Jim McGovern, general manager of Ford of Londonderry, a New Hampshire Ford dealer. “Not to mention, when Ford customers opt for an electrified vehicle they sacrifice very little, if anything, when it comes to driving dynamics.”
The Ford C-MAX Energi and Focus Electric both feature the automaker’s SmartGauge with EcoGuide technology, which helps owners drive as efficiently as possible. Using two high-resolution, full-color LCD screens on either side of the speedometer, SmartGauge with EcoGuide displays leaves that grow in number as efficiency increases, allowing drivers to maximize the time between fill-ups or charges.
Buyers have responded to Ford’s push toward greener vehicles, with models like the C-MAX Energi helping the automaker achieve its best-ever hybrid sales in the first quarter of this year. Ford sold 21,080 gas-electric models in the first three months of 2013, marking the first time the brand has moved more than 20,000 hybrid vehicles in a quarter. That tally represents a 324 percent increase year-over-year, with Ford increasing its electrified-vehicle market share by 12 percent compared to the same time period in 2012.
“Just because a vehicle is innovative doesn’t always mean that it will sell well at the dealership, but Ford has developed its hybrid lineup to appeal to the masses just as much as it does to staunchly eco-conscious buyers,” added McGovern. “Whether drivers want a boldly styled midsize sedan like the Fusion Hybrid or a spacious, versatile vehicle like the C-MAX Energi, they aren’t lacking in sustainable choices from Ford.”
