New generation of artists breathes new life into Los Angeles rap scene
Although Southern rap has dominated the charts for the last 10 years, a new generation of L.A. based artists is helping to return the city back to its Hip Hop glory days. Contributing to this burgeoning movement are rappers Kikstan and Dr3 whose new video “Finish Line” is a refreshing hint of what to expect from this new school of MC’s. Though sonically a departure from the signature funk and synth sound popularized by mid 90’s west coast producers, the video’s imagery is undoubtedly reflective of L.A. life, women and cars included.
Both solo artists in their own right, Kikstan and Dr3 collaborated on their first joint effort “The Medication” mixtape released earlier this year. When fans made it clear that “Finish Line” should be released as a single, the duo decided to make it their next official video. “Finish Line is about persistence,” says Dr3. “It’s about moving forward regardless of the obstacles in your path.” Kikstan adds, “It’s also about that special girl…the one that makes you feel like you can conquer the world together and nothing can stop you.” Both artists agree that “Finish Line” is the perfect song choice to introduce new fans to their brand of music.
Kikstan and Dr3 met in middle school but it wasn’t until high school that the two would begin pursuing music professionally. Inspired by the likes of the Notorious B.I.G and Jay-Z as well as west coast icons Tupac, Snoop Dogg, and Dr. Dre, the the pair set out to blaze their own trail independently.
Through their music and lifestyle company GrindDontSk8, Kikstan and Dr3 have a slew of projects schedule to drop between 2012 and 2013. With a clothing line and custom made skateboards as well as new mixtapes and videos, the duo aims to make a significant impact on L.A.’s Hip Hop scene. Dr3 concludes, “I’m going to pour my heart out to the world. I hope that my passion inspires others to do the same.”
