HM King Mohammed VI held on Saturday a phone conversation with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.
During this conversation, the Sovereign and the Secretary General discussed the latest developments and the present timetable related to the Moroccan Sahara issue.
On this occasion, the King reiterated Morocco’s constant commitment and constructive cooperation to reach a final political settlement to this regional dispute, within Moroccan sovereignty.
The King further drew the UN secretary General’s attention to the imperative need to preserve the negotiations parameters as they were defined by the Security Council, safeguard the presence framework and modalities of the UN involvement and avoid biased approaches and risky options.
The King warned that any straying from this track will be fatal for the ongoing process and holds dangers for any UN involvement in the issue.
The conversation also covered the King’s sustained actions and laudable initiatives for the stability and development of the African continent.
In a report on the Sahara issued on Thursday, UN Secretary General, Ban Ki -moon highlighted the efforts made by Morocco in terms of strengthening the national institutions involved, particularly in the field of human Rights, noting “with satisfaction” the “achievements” of the Kingdom, particularly with regard to the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) and its branches in Laayoune and Dakhla, and the reform of the military justice. The UN chief also “welcomed the cooperation of the Kingdom with the special procedures of the Human Rights Council.
By contrast, regarding the situation in the Polisario-controlled camps (southeastern Algeria) , Ban Ki-Moon reported an increasing frustration among the population, particularly among the youth, stressing that the security concern is a challenge to the UN mission operations. “Important criminal and terrorist activities in the region” were reported, he went on, warning that “extremist groups are actively hiring to reinforce their presence in the neighboring regions and to get arms supplies”.
