Mazda’s CX-5 and MX-5 Miata Drive Brand to Best March Sales Since 2007

Two similarly named vehicles with very different target buyers helped drive Mazda to its best March sales since 2007 last month. The Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV and Mazda MX-5 Miata roadster each saw double-digit sales increases compared to March 2013, boosting the automaker’s overall sales to 34,903 units for a 9 percent rise year-over-year.

Launched just over two years ago as the first vehicle to fully incorporate Mazda’s fuel-saving SKYACTIV technologies, the 35-mpg-highway CX-5 had its best sales month yet in March. More than 11,800 CX-5 models found new homes in the United States last month, a 67 percent increase over March 2013. Meanwhile, the iconic Mazda MX-5 Miata achieved its best March performance since 2009, with its sales rising by 31 percent year-over-year.

“The CX-5 and MX-5 Miata are the most exciting designs we’ve ever seen from Mazda, each offering more driving fun per dollar than their competition,” said Jon Schwartz, owner of Schwartz Mazda, a New Jersey Mazda dealer in Shrewsbury. “The overall quality of the Mazda brand also remains excellent — our repair shop is like a ghost town, even as our showroom floor is busier than ever.”

Currently celebrating the 25th anniversary of its global debut at the Chicago Auto Show in 1989, the Mazda MX-5 Miata will be the center of attention at the New York International Auto Show later this month. Starting on April 18, 15 MX-5 Miata vehicles will be on display at the show, including current and past production models, auto-show concepts and racecars. The showcase comes as the automotive press continues to speculate about the next-generation MX-5 Miata that is expected to debut within the next year, with rumors of the sports car receiving SKYACTIV-G engines similar to those found on the current CX-5, Mazda3 and Mazda6.
