Independent travel agency The Midcounties Co-op Travel has opened its first branches in the East Midlands creating up to 19 jobs.

Coronation Street star Alan Halsall, who plays ‘Tyrone Dobbs’ in the TV soap, was a big attraction when he performed the opening ceremony at the branches at the Westfield Centre in Derby and Kings Street in Nottingham.

The new ventures are among the first concept stores to be branded as cooptravel.co.uk. In addition to a network of more than 50 travel branches, Midcounties runs an online travel business which has given the new branches their name.

Sue Reid, General Manager, Travel Distribution, at Midcounties said: “We are a member-owned and independent business with more than 90 years of travel experience. We see the new branches as a great opportunity to serve the local communities which is why we have invested in the East Midlands.

“We are very excited about opening in this the International Year of Co-operatives and we wanted to create a real buzz. We are looking forward to welcoming local people and new members and giving them a wider choice and independent advice when it comes to booking their holidays.”

The Derby branch, which is managed by Adam Deane, will create up to 11 jobs. Tresa Storer, who is from Arnold, Nottingham, has been appointed manager of the Nottingham branch which has created up to eight jobs. They both have extensive experience within the travel industry and they head experienced and knowledgeable teams.

The opening celebrations at Derby and Nottingham gave fans the chance to meet the popular Corrie star and get his autograph. There were also free prize draws for the chance to win a holiday and special offers.

Midcounties has stated its aim to become the leading independent travel retailer in the UK, with co-operative values at its core.
