MINI Paceman Lands GOOD DESIGN 2013 Award

Auto journalists can often have a hard time agreeing on whether a new vehicle’s design has hit the mark, but if the design community itself can reach a consensus on the merits of a model, then the car might be on to something. The MINI Paceman recently did just that, earning a GOOD DESIGN 2013 award presented by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design in partnership with the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies.

The world’s oldest design accolades, the GOOD DESIGN awards were introduced in 1950 by a trio of architects and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) curator at the time. This year’s jury was made up of representatives from seven leading design firms, and they were given the task of identifying the products or concepts that have gone beyond the “normal horizons of everyday product design.” After receiving thousands of submissions from more than 38 countries, the jury narrowed down the field to about 700 winners in a wide variety of industries, with the MINI Paceman honored in the Transportation 2013 category.

“There are very few cars on the road that can transcend the norm of what a vehicle should look like while still actually appealing to buyers, but the MINI Paceman is one of them,” said Gary King, general manager of MINI of Bedford, a New Hampshire MINI dealer. “The best thing about the Paceman is that it’s as impressive at function as it is with form, especially with its available ALL4 all-wheel drive for getting through our rough New England winters.”

Designed as a sportier two-door version of the popular MINI Countryman compact crossover, the MINI Paceman assumes a lower stance and receives a more dramatically sloping roofline, longer doors and an integrated rear spoiler. Inside the cabin, rear passengers enjoy a lounge-like space thanks to the two individual seats and matching armrests built into the circular-trim side panels, as well as the cutouts in the back of the front seats that create extra legroom. The backrests of the rear seats can also be folded flat to create up to 38.1 cubic feet of cargo space that can be accessed through the large tailgate.
