Miss Alabama Hopefuls Set Aside Day of Service

Decatur , Alabama , USA, 04/17/2015 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Saturday, April 18th will see Miss Alabama hopefuls serving and raising awareness for four organizations across Alabama. “As we raise money for state scholarships and CMN Hospitals, Miss America Serves also shows our organization’s commitment to volunteerism”, said Nan Teninbaum, President of the Miss Alabama Pageant. “The four organizations- Habitat of Decatur Morgan County, Habitat of Montgomery, Temporary Emergency Services of Tuscaloosa and our Children’s Hospitals in Birmingham and Mobile, are all the beneficiaries of a day of service from our 50 local titleholders”, she continued. “Miss America Serves stands as a tribute to the services that local CMN Hospitals provide every day. Since 1921, the community service aspect of the Miss Alabama program has propelled contestants into arenas of prominence where policy is made, laws are enacted or changed, crucial funding is realized, and lives are positively affected. Contestants work for causes represented by their personally chosen platforms which may include Cancer research and education, organ donation, child enrichment and mentoring programs, senior citizen advocacy, arts and cultural organizations, and many others. This is just a normal activity for us— we’re just all doing it on the same day”, concluded Teninbaum.

“I am so honored to be able to participate in Miss America Serves day”, said Emily Davis, Miss Wallace State. “Few things are better than the feeling you get after volunteering! Community service is extremely important to me and I am so excited to help build a house with Decatur’s Habitat for Humanity, along with the rest of my Miss Alabama sisters”, she said. “The most humbling experience I have had was helping with tornado relief back in 2011 when the tornados hit all over the state of Alabama. In such a heartbreaking time, it’s amazing to see others come together for the greater good and I know Miss America Serves Day will be just as rewarding. This is an amazing opportunity to not only give back to my community but to also raise funds for Children’s Miracle Network, and I can’t wait”, concluded Davis.

“Working with Habitat for Humanity is one of the greatest organizations I have ever volunteered my time with”, stated Debra Talley, Miss Alabama State Field Director. “My first experience with Habitat was in 1994 when all 50 of our titleholders that year, helped build a house from the ground up in Hartselle in one day”, said Talley. “Because of that first introduction, we continued to volunteer with the Decatur Morgan County Habitat for the next 3 years, building 3 more houses. Back then we called our day of volunteering, ‘Make a Difference Day’. With the reintroduction of that special day of volunteering comes a new name—‘Miss America Serves’. And, although we designate one particular day of the year to bring the young women together to work on a project, these titleholders work all year on other projects that are their particular platforms—or causes they care very deeply for and rally around for not only during their competition years, but continue to be a strong advocate for the rest of their lives. The Miss Alabama / America program empowers women to make positive change in whatever platform they feel compassionate about. Volunteerism during their competition years is just PRESS RELEASE the beginning for most of these young women as they become our community, state, and national leaders throughout their lives. If you really want to be a part of positive change, associate yourself with one of these outstanding women that participate in our program— they truly are great examples of ‘making a difference in other peoples’ lives and communities in which they live”, said Talley.

“What could be better than trading in a pair of high heels for a pair of boots to help three amazing organizations in our state in one day”, said Rachel Persall, Miss Tennessee Valley. “I’m so thrilled to be working alongside my Miss Alabama sisters as we support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, while working directly with Habitat for Humanity and Temporary Emergency Services of Tuscaloosa”, she continued. “Crowns off ladies! We need our hard hats! I cannot wait to hopefully touch and impact many lives through Miss America’s Day of Service”, concluded Persall.

Your support of these great titleholders will help provide treatments for sick children through the Children’s Hospitals of Alabama. For more information about donating to the Miss America Serves Day in the North Alabama area, please contact Debra Talley at dntalley@bellsouth.net.
