NASCAR Star Kyle Busch and Toyota Get Rowdy with Customized Camry SE

At the 2012 SEMA Show in Las Vegas this week, visitors can check out a lively collaboration between America’s best-selling car and a star of America’s favorite motorsport. NASCAR driver Kyle Busch recently worked with an aftermarket tuning team to design the Rowdy Edition Camry, an amped-up version of a stock 2012 Toyota Camry SE, which debuted at SEMA on Oct. 30.

Though Busch drives a Camry of his own while competing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, the Rowdy Edition intentionally maintains much of the functionality of the production car while injecting the personality of a street-legal racer. Outfitted with aftermarket parts from the Detroit Speed, Inc. build shop in North Carolina, the Rowdy Edition Camry gets a custom wide-body kit, front and rear belly pans, a front splitter, a rear diffuser and a custom fabricated dual exhaust. The tricked-out Camry SE was created as part of the Toyota Racing Dream Build Challenge, which enlisted four world-class racers to each customize their own Toyota and compete for a chance to raise $50,000 for a charity of their choice.

“Kyle Busch knows firsthand that the latest Camry can deliver when it comes to performance, and his SEMA creation shows that the car can be very appealing to driving enthusiasts in street-legal form too,” said Jeff Leclerc, general sales manger of Central Maine Toyota, a Waterville, ME Toyota dealership. “Even the production Camry SE trim has been surprising drivers with its impressive responsiveness and airtight handling.”

As part of the Camry’s redesign for the 2012 model year last fall, the SE trim received a sportier suspension and more precise steering, as well as large 18-inch alloy wheels and special tires for improved handling. The Camry SE’s bolder driving manners are reflected on its exterior, with an aggressive mesh grille, integrated underbody spoilers and sport side-rocker panels. Meanwhile, a driver-focused cabin features supportive sport seats, performance-focused gauges and a leather-trimmed steering wheel with paddle shifters.

The new Toyota Camry SE has made significant in-roads with younger buyers this year, helping overall Camry sales reach 314,788 units through September, an increase of 37 percent compared to the same period in 2011. Combined with the success of new additions to the Prius family and the continued popularity of the Corolla, the redesigned Camry has been instrumental to the Toyota brand’s 32-percent year-over-year sales boost thus far in 2012.

A good portion of Toyota’s recent sales have come from converting return customers, a long-time strength of the company that had been hampered by setbacks in recent years, particularly the March 2011 earthquake in Japan. Experian Automotive’s Loyalty and Market Trend analysis for the second quarter of this year found that Toyota had the highest customer loyalty of any automaker for the first time since 2009, with 47.3 percent of its new-vehicle sales coming from existing customers.

“Toyota has certainly been through a lot during the past few years, but it has remained focused on quality and innovation, and now it’s right back at the top of the industry,” noted Leclerc. “The results of Toyota’s hard work can be seen across its lineup, whether it’s a new Camry that is sportier yet more reliable than ever, or a new Prius model that offers buyers more versatility as they seek a fuel-efficient ride.”
