When it comes to high-performance vehicles, few letters hold more weight in the auto industry than ‘M.’ Having built award-winning sports cars since 1972, BMW’s M division recently added to its power-packed resume, as the all-new 2013 BMW M5 Sedan and M6 Coupe have reached U.S. showrooms after a two-year hiatus.
Along with the 2013 M6 Convertible that arrived in July, the 2013 BMW M5 Sedan and M6 Coupe represent a new era for the M badge, with the luxury automaker working to improve fuel efficiency without diluting the performance that fans have come to expect. To that end, the 2013 M5 and M6 models have done away with the naturally aspirated V10 engine of their predecessors, instead using a smaller-displacement 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that produces a gigantic 560 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. Those numbers represent gains of 60 horsepower and 117 pound-feet of torque compared to the larger, outgoing engine, yet fuel efficiency has improved by 25 percent.
“BMW M models have always been some of the most thrilling rides on the market, but the new 2013 BMW M5 and M6 set a new standard for performance, efficiency and refinement,” said Marshal Cabot, general manager of BMW of Peabody, a BMW dealer in Massachusetts. “Their twin-turbocharged V8 is an incredible feat of engineering; it allows for a smooth ride around town, but is capable of amazing acceleration when it’s time to ramp things up on the open road.”
Tailoring the M5 and M6 for super-car performance meant more than just adding a new engine, however. The standard seven-speed automatic M Double Clutch Transmission and available six-speed manual gearbox are docile in traffic, but offer quick gear changes when on the move. Elsewhere, an Active M Differential in the rear ensures that the engine’s power is effectively delivered to the road, while enhancements to the chassis and suspension handle the additional stress that comes with higher speeds.
BMW has also outfitted the interiors of the 2013 M5 and M6 with its highest-quality luxury amenities and technology. Merino extended leather upholstery, custom M sports seats and a unique aluminum trim will please even the most discerning BMW fans, while the automaker’s iDrive infotainment system features a large 10.2-inch control display in the dash.
Though the 2013 BMW M5 and M6 provide drivers with rare levels of performance, only a very select group of buyers recently got to pre-order the upcoming 2013 BMW 760Li V-12 25 Years Edition, which commemorates 25 years of the automaker’s V12 engines. Just 15 of the ultra-special edition vehicles were up for sale to American buyers, sporting Champagne Full Merino Leather, exclusive black piping and special badging on the door sills, headrests and iDrive controller. First coming to market in 1987, BMW’s V12 engines have a long-held reputation for their seamless power and refinement.
“BMW’s run of building innovative engines stretches back for decades, and the V12 is a very special part of that heritage,” added Cabot. “The 15 people that received the privilege to buy one of the 7 Series V-12 25 Years Edition models will own a piece of BMW history, as well as a stunning car with unmatched quality.”
