It’s no secret that air pollution is detrimental to one’s health, but two new studies highlight just how severe the dangers are, particularly in urban areas. The research — published in The Lancet and The Lancet Oncology journals — shows a significant link between exposure to air pollution and an increased risk of lung cancer and heart failure.
These alarming findings underscore the need for effective air filtration, in order to keep dangerous outdoor air particles from entering indoor environments — where people spend approximately 90 percent of their time.
In the first study, covering nine European countries, air pollution was found to increase the risk of lung cancer even at particle levels lower than those recommended by the European Union.
The second study connected air pollution to heart failure. It found that individuals with already weakened hearts who were exposed to high levels of carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and fine particulate pollutants — all present in vehicular exhaust fumes — were more susceptible to suffer hospitalizations and death due to heart failure. This was a new and troubling finding as previous studies had drawn a link between pollution and heart attacks, but had not looked specifically at heart failure.
Unchecked, outdoor air pollution can easily invade indoor environments. This makes it critical to employ effective air filters, particularly in urban areas where greater vehicle traffic means higher concentrations of dangerous pollutants. To help meet this important need, Camfil — the world’s leading provider of clean air solutions — has developed its innovative “City” series of air filters.
Designed specifically for urban environments, this series of molecular filters — City-Flo XL, CityCarb, City-Flow, and CitySorb — combine a high-performance particle filter and a broad-spectrum carbon filter in a single product. This makes them highly effective against particulates and exhaust fumes, and the activated carbon removes a wide range of volatile organic compounds, as well as ozone.
The design of the filters makes them especially well suited for the ventilation systems of buildings situated along streets and roads with heavy traffic. Significantly for building owners, the City filters can be installed without requiring any modification to existing air handling units.
Developing high-performance solutions to high-priority challenges — from sustainability and energy efficiency to fostering good health — has been at the core of Camfil’s strategy since its founding a half century ago. Today, the company maintains 23 manufacturing plants and 6 research and development sites across the globe, creating air filters that maintain their efficiency longer than traditional products, and require less energy and less frequent replacement. Indeed, Camfil customers are reducing their HVAC costs by up to 30 percent — while enjoying optimal air quality.
Camfil City filters are yet another example of how innovative engineering can boost performance, efficiency, comfort, and health — simultaneously.
The world leader in air filtration systems, Camfil provides clean air solutions for hospitals, hotels, office buildings, educational institutions, and pharmaceutical and biotech companies. We provide the tools to achieve sustainability, maintain high air quality, and reduce airborne infections — all while lowering total cost of ownership.
