While the Ford Focus RS performance hatchback has thrilled drivers in Europe since its introduction in 2002, American buyers have been kept on the sidelines thus far. That is about to change, however, following the debut of the redesigned 2016 Ford Focus RS at the Geneva Motor Show last month. Packing more than 315 horsepower and equipped with the new Ford Performance All-Wheel Drive system with Dynamic Torque Vectoring, the 2016 Focus RS will be the first RS model to be sold stateside when it arrives at dealerships later this year.
The all-new Focus RS will house an upgraded version of the groundbreaking 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine available in the redesigned 2015 Ford Mustang. Helping drivers harness the powerplant’s extra output will be a stiffer sport suspension than the one found on the current Focus ST, as well as the most powerful RS brake system yet replete with Brembo front calipers. Owners will also be able to tailor their rides with the first-ever selectable drive modes for a Ford RS model, including an industry-first drift mode and launch control.
“The new Ford Performance division is dead set on making the Blue Oval brand the leader in developing bold vehicles for driving enthusiasts, and the U.S.-bound Focus RS is one of several new models launching in the next few years to accomplish that goal,” said Steve Nilsson, general manager of Glenwood Springs Ford, a Colorado Ford dealership near Grand Junction. “We have seen some really fun-to-drive versions of Ford’s compact hatchback, including the upgraded 2015 Focus ST, but the 2016 Focus RS will surely be the most engaging model yet.”
Outside, the 2016 Focus RS will complement its responsive driving dynamics with a sculpted exterior that is at once aerodynamic and aggressive. By reshaping the large front splitter, prominent rear spoiler and underbody, Ford Performance has made the new RS model 6 percent more aerodynamic than its predecessor while lowering the drag coefficient by 9 percent to 0.35. Stylistically, the 2016 Focus RS will be differentiated by a bolder trapezoidal grille bearing an “RS” logo, standard bi-xenon HID headlamps, multi-spoke 19-inch RS alloy wheels and twin round high-performance exhaust outlets. Inside the cabin, drivers will be treated to standard Recaro bolstered sport seats and a SYNC 3 infotainment system that features a high-definition eight-inch touchscreen as its centerpiece.
