Nimble Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk Earns Four Wheeler of the Year Title

When the all-new Jeep Cherokee first hit the market in 2013 for the 2014 model year, some off-roading purists questioned whether the sleek and fuel-efficient midsize SUV could hold its own off the beaten path like its rugged brand-mates. Fast-forward to 2015, however, and those doubts have largely faded into the background, with Four Wheeler magazine recently naming the 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk its Four Wheeler of the Year.

To be eligible for the 2015 Four Wheeler of the Year award, an SUV was required to be all-new or significantly revised while also sporting a two-speed transfer case or similar equipment. Among its updates for the 2015 model year, the Cherokee Trailhawk received fuel-saving engine stop-start (ESS) technology as a standard feature for its available 3.2-liter Pentastar V6 engine. During on-road testing by Four Wheeler editors, the ESS technology complemented the SUV’s smooth, comfortable and even sporty ride, while the cabin stood out from competitors with its superior materials, fit and finish and navigation design. When the moment of truth came on remote trails, editors described the Cherokee Trailhawk as “super fun” on sand and “super maneuverable” on rocks.

“The Jeep Cherokee was designed to have excellent on-road manners and a refined cabin, so some in the industry initially assumed that it would go soft off-road like other new SUVs on the market, but that’s simply not the case,” said Richard Gill, owner of Brigham-Gill Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, a Jeep dealer in Natick, Mass. “All Cherokee models are available with advanced four-wheel drive and a Selec-Terrain traction control system that allows you to tailor the ride on snow, rock, sand and mud, but dedicated off-road enthusiasts will still want to opt for the Trailhawk trim.”

Boosted by a standard Jeep Active Drive Lock four-wheel-drive system with a locking rear differential, the 2015 Cherokee Trailhawk is Trail Rated by Jeep, offering more capability and durability than other Cherokee models with its greater approach and departure angles, one-inch factory lift, red tow hooks and skid plates. The Cherokee Trailhawk also features an impressive 56:1 crawl ratio and Selec-Speed Control technology for navigating steep or uneven obstacles at a slow and steady pace.
