Plastic Surgery Surges in Popularity During the Pandemic

The pandemic hasn’t dampened the desire for plastic surgery. In fact, plastic surgery and non-surgical cosmetic procedures have had a surprising surge in popularity during these unprecedented times.

There are many theories about why the pandemic hasn’t dampened the desire to get cosmetic improvements and why it’s encouraged people to seek out various treatments and procedures.

Some attribute this phenomenon to a rise in Zoom meetings where people have to look at their faces and bodies all of the time. The theory is that people are analyzing how they look and figuring out what they would like to change. They’ve noticed the deep bags under the eyes that don’t go away with sleep and the wrinkles that stretch across their forehead. Instead of looking into filters to improve their appearance on camera, they’ve looked to cosmetic intervention as a solution.

Some attribute it to the fact that people are more isolated and believe that they have more time to recover from procedures in private. Many Canadians have had to start working from home the moment that COVID-19 spread across the country. This rare opportunity makes it easier to comfortably recover from treatments and avoid any speculation or judgment from coworkers.

Some even credit COVID-19 masks for this phenomenon. Since COVID-19 masks cover the lower half of the face, patients can hide the side effects of facial treatments like dermal fillers and Botox injections. Bruising and scars from surgery are also safely hidden from view. This allows patients to go about their day-to-day business without worrying about unwanted looks or questions.

With all of these factors, cosmetic clinics have seen a sharp increase in demand for their surgical and non-surgical procedures, and many clinics have done their best to rise to the occasion. One example of this is the series of GraceMed clinics located across the Greater Toronto Area. This chain offers world-class cosmetic surgery in Toronto, Oakville, Burlington and Mississauga. They had to close their locations in the first months of the pandemic to adhere to COVID-19 safety regulations and lockdown updates.

After that small obstacle, they were able to reopen their locations across the Greater Toronto Area. They announced new features that prioritized physical distancing in order to limit any chances of COVID-19 spread and guarantee the safety of both clients and clinic workers. Clients are booking their consultations online and by phone to limit traffic at the locations.

Clinics will have to handle an even larger increase in client demand in the near future. The pandemic has created a monumental backlog of surgeries that will have to be addressed when COVID-19 is no longer a top priority. The province of Ontario has over 245,000 medical procedures backlogged because of the pandemic.

People will also be more comfortable booking procedures once they are vaccinated. The moment that they feel like COVID-19 is no longer a personal risk, they will feel free to make future plans, including plans to undergo plastic surgery.

Clinics across the country will need to prepare for the floodgates to open and for their schedules to fill up with appointments. The trending interest in plastic surgery and the growing backlog in procedures will mean that they could be booked solid for a very long time.
