The main competitors of the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel have all received major redesigns within the last year or so, but in a recent comparison by Motor Trend, they still came up short of the only diesel-powered half-ton pickup truck on the market. Pitting similarly equipped 2015 models of the Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado and Ram 1500 against each other, Motor Trend’s 2015 half-ton pickup shootout tested the trucks with and without payloads and trailers for more than 1,000 miles through cities, highways and mountains.
When it came to driving with empty truck beds, the victorious Ram 1500 EcoDiesel was set apart by its responsive eight-speed automatic transmission that made one Motor Trend editor feel like the F-150’s and Silverado’s six-speed gearboxes were “from an entirely different era.” Meanwhile, Ram’s popular pickup rode unencumbered while hauling a 1,000-pound payload on both flat ground and a consistent 6 percent grade on Arizona Highway 68. Though the 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque produced by the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine made easy work of the 7,000-pound trailer used during towing, it was the Ram 1500’s optional air suspension that won over editors by not only lowering the truck for easy hitching, but by also enhancing the ride so that it nearly felt like there was no trailer attached at all.
“All three of the major pickup-truck manufacturers have taken different approaches to mixing traditional capability with the fuel efficiency that modern buyers want, but the new Motor Trend results suggest that only Ram has found the sweet spot so far,” said Scott Pinnette, general manager of Central Maine Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, a Ram dealership in Waterville, Maine. “The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel was either the favorite or part of a toss-up in the editors’ various performance tests, but its competitors couldn’t even come close to matching its real-world fuel economy.”
Despite the fact that it featured an all-new 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine and lightweight aluminum body, the four-wheel-drive 2015 Ford F-150 only returned 22 mpg on the highway in Motor Trend’s Real MPG testing, coming up one mile per gallon short of its EPA rating. Conversely, the four-wheel-drive 2015 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel bested its EPA rating by one mile per gallon, netting an impressive 28 mpg on the highway during Real MPG testing. As for the four-wheel-drive 2015 Chevy Silverado with a 5.3-liter V8 engine, it only managed a Real MPG of 19 mpg on the highway, a drop of three miles per gallon compared to the truck’s EPA rating.
