The Ford F-150 has stolen recent headlines after switching to a lightweight all-aluminum body for the 2015 model year, but that controversial move wasn’t enough to earn the vehicle the title of 2015 Green Truck of the Year from Green Car Journal. Instead, the honor went to the new Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, which currently returns the highest highway fuel economy of any pickup truck in America while boasting an impressive 9,200-pound maximum towing capacity.
Housing a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine, the 2015 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque on tap while offering a 28-mpg highway rating. Beyond the fact that diesel fuel emits less CO2 than gasoline, the EcoDiesel unit features an oxidation catalyst that further reduces those harmful emissions. Capable of running on B20 biodiesel, it is also the only clean-diesel engine available on a half-ton truck. The editors at Green Car Journal recognized the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel for those environmentally friendly attributes, but the truck still had to deliver on traditional factors like versatility, functionality, safety, style and value before being named Green Truck of the Year.
“About a decade ago, the term ‘green truck’ was somewhat of an oxymoron because there weren’t fuel-efficient pickups that could provide the capability that buyers needed, but the new Ram 1500 EcoDiesel shows just how much things have changed,” said Richard Gill, owner of Brigham-Gill Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, a Ram dealer in Natick, Mass. “Even the staunchest pickup-truck purists are buying the EcoDiesel, and those strong sales are leading to a real environmental impact out on the road.”
The popularity of the EcoDiesel model recently prompted the Chrysler Group to double production of the truck, boosting it to 20 percent of the manufacturing mix for the Ram 1500. Last month, overall sales of Ram pickup trucks rose by 33 percent compared to October 2013, totaling 39,834 units. Nearly 360,000 of the brand’s pickups have found new homes through the first 10 months of 2014, a 23 percent increase over the same period last year.
