Land Rover modernized its Range Rover Sport for the 2014 model year with sleeker styling and a weight loss of about 800 pounds, but the SUV continues to prove it is still a go-anywhere, do-anything vehicle at heart. The latest example of the 2014 Range Rover Sport’s all-conditions prowess is its 2014 Four Wheeler of the Year award from Four Wheeler magazine, which required that the model outperform a variety of new or significantly updated four-wheel-drive vehicles in a series of on- and off-road tests.
Besting the Dodge Durango Limited, the Toyota 4Runner Trail Premium and Jeep’s Cherokee Trailhawk and Grand Cherokee Limited, the 2014 Range Rover Sport was lauded by Four Wheeler editors for offering sports-car-like responsiveness on pavement while conquering sand, dirt and rocks with ease. To be considered for the award, each SUV needed to have a transfer case with a dedicated low-range gear, a production run of at least 1,500 units and an on-sale date prior to Jan. 15, 2014. The win for the new Range Rover Sport marks the fourth time a Land Rover model has been named Four Wheeler of the Year.
“The Range Rover Sport has always been geared toward buyers who want something more capable and versatile than a luxury sports sedan, but now the latest version is even giving those types of cars a run for their money when it comes to ride comfort and responsiveness,” said Dave Edwards, general manager of Land Rover Peabody, a Greater Boston Range Rover dealer. “Still, you can’t win a Four Wheeler of the Year award based on road manners alone, so the new Range Rover Sport had to follow in the tracks of past Land Rover models and make a convincing argument off the beaten path.”
The 2014 Range Rover Sport features a new all-aluminum unibody structure that simultaneously improves handling, comfort and fuel efficiency with its strong-yet-lightweight design. Meanwhile, capability has been enhanced compared to the outgoing model with a 2.3-inch boost in ground clearance, nearly six more inches of wading depth and a next-generation Terrain Response 2 system that uses sensors to automatically adjust the responses of different drive systems to the surface conditions outside.
