The shortlist for the Red House Children’s Book Award 2013 has been released, and it has some very big names on it!
The award is one of the most prestigious children’s book awards in the UK, having been running for 33 years now. There are three categories in the award, Books for Younger Children, Books for Younger Readers and Books for Older Readers. The Red House Children’s Book Award is the only literary award in the country to have the input of real kids to decide on the best fiction books, and some of the world’s best children’s authors have being crowned the overall winner of the award in the past. Previous winners have included J. K. Rowling, Patrick Ness, Michael Morpurgo, Andy Stanton, Malorie Blackman and Anthony Horowitz, amongst others.
This year, though, the shortlist features some incredibly varied names, with a previous winner, a famous comedian and a shortlisted author from the 2010 award on it. The shortlist for the three categories have now been released, so children all over the country can now go online to cast their vote. The winners of each category, along with the overall winner of the award, will be announced at a breath-taking ceremony on Saturday 23rd February 2013, which will be held at the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre in London.
So, without further ado, the shortlist for the Red House Children’s Book Award 2013 is as follows:

‘Spooky Spooky House’ by Andrew Weale and Lee Wildish

‘The World of Norm: May Contain Nuts’ by Jonathan Meres and Donough O’Mally
‘Gangsta Granny’ by David Walliams and Tony Ross
Books for Older Readers
‘Eight Keys’ by Suzanne La Fleur
‘The Power of Six’ by Pittacus Lore
‘The Medusa Project: Hit Squad’ by Sophie McKenzie
Children can go ahead and vote on their favourite from each category by visiting the website www.redhousechildrensbookaward.co.uk now, and voting will remain open until Sunday 27th January 2013. Parents can also look online now to take a look at the shortlisted books for Christmas inspiration, as cheap books can make great Christmas gifts for growing children.
