Redesigned 2013 Range Rover Lauded as Best Dream Machine by MotorWeek

The Range Rover recently dropped approximately 700 pounds as part of its extensive redesign for the 2013 model year, but that hasn’t led to the luxury SUV receiving any less hardware in the awards department. Following up its recent recognition as Playboy magazine’s Best SUV of 2013, the 2013 Range Rover was named Best Dream Machine in MotorWeek’s 2013 Drivers’ Choice Awards this month.

An automotive TV series and news site, MotorWeek tapped its knowledgeable editorial staff to determine which new vehicles offer the most appeal to consumers based on factors like performance, fuel efficiency, price and practicality. While the Best Dream Machine category focuses more on driving pleasure than the practical, the new Range Rover is the first SUV to use an all-aluminum unibody frame, allowing for a significant reduction in fuel consumption without diminishing any of the nameplate’s signature capability.

“Buyers will find that the redesigned Range Rover is just as good, if not better, when taken off the beaten path, yet its lightweight frame and revised adaptive air suspension make it a much nimbler ride on the road,” said Dave Edwards, general manager of Land Rover Peabody, a Range Rover dealer in Massachusetts. “The Range Rover’s fresh styling reflects that smoother feel as well, thanks to the sloped roofline and swept-back headlights that were inspired by the popular Evoque.”

U.S. buyers have been responding positively to the new Range Rover’s lighter, sleeker design, with 1,156 models sold last month for an 88 percent increase compared to January 2011. That tally helped Land Rover’s overall sales rise by 31 percent year-over-year, resulting in the luxury brand’s best-ever January in the United States.

Despite the Range Rover’s rapid sales, the Range Rover Sport remained the automaker’s best seller in January by a narrow margin, selling 1,251 units for an 11 percent jump compared to the same month last year. Meanwhile, the Range Rover Evoque compact crossover continues to attract new buyers following its market debut in 2011, with its sales last month reaching 929 units, a gain of 37 percent year-over-year.

“Land Rover is finding innovative ways to modernize its lineup without jeopardizing its go-anywhere, do-anything reputation, and its customers have overwhelmingly approved thus far,” added Edwards. “The Range Rover Sport is up next with a redesign for the 2014 model year, so we don’t expect the brand’s sales momentum to wane any time soon.”
