Once scheduled to be shut down in the aftermath of the Great Recession, the Chrysler Group’s Sterling Heights Assembly Plant is now poised for a much brighter future. In fact, the automaker recently announced that the Michigan facility has taken on 800 new employees to support production of the redesigned 2015 Chrysler 200, bringing total employment to nearly 2,800 workers. That number is more than twice what it was at the nadir of the economic downturn in 2009.
The resurgence of the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant can be traced back to the strong support from its employees and local community, but an overall investment of nearly $1 billion from the Chrysler Group has funded substantive infrastructure changes in the past few years. New state-of-the-art paint and body shops and the installation of other new equipment have helped reduce the energy required to produce the 2015 Chrysler 200 by 62 percent compared to the outgoing model. Overall, the Chrysler Group has committed investments of almost $5.2 billion and added nearly 13,400 hourly employees at its facilities since June 2009.
“The announcement of hundreds of new jobs at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant shows just how far Chrysler has come since the depths of the recession,” said Tim Parker, dealer principal of Tim Parker Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, an Arkansas Chrysler dealer. “Of course, the automaker’s comeback has been fueled by its investment in American workers, but another huge factor has been its commitment to new vehicle designs that are both engaging and fuel efficient, and the new Chrysler 200 is a perfect example.”
Donning the new “face of Chrysler,” the 2015 Chrysler 200 features a grille that mimics the shape of its winged Chrysler logo and swoops directly into the swept-back headlamps. When the car goes on sale later this spring, buyers will have a choice of two engines, including a standard 2.4-liter MultiAir 2 Tigershark four-cylinder that is manufacturer estimated to return 35 on the highway and a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 that produces a best-in-class 295 horsepower. Regardless of powerplant choice, the new Chrysler 200 will be the first midsize sedan to feature a standard nine-speed automatic transmission, enabling greater fuel economy and smoother shifting. Inside the well-appointed cabin, drivers will find a wealth of high-tech features, including full electronic gear shifting with a rotary shift knob, an available seven-inch full-color LED instrument cluster and an optional Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen.
