For a decade after their U.S. debut, the Impreza WRX and WRX STI had been Subaru’s darlings of the driving-enthusiast community, but in 2012, the automaker created some internal competition with the launch of its affordable, rear-wheel-drive BRZ sports car. Subaru has now dropped the Impreza nameplate from its all-wheel-drive WRX and WRX STI sedans for the 2015 model year, placing its rally-inspired models in the spotlight as they look to reignite their love affair with drivers after a complete redesign.
With orders currently open ahead of their arrival at dealerships later this spring, the new 2015 Subaru WRX and WRX STI both benefit from a new chassis that is stiffer and more agile, as well as new Active Torque Vectoring technology that enhances the Vehicle Dynamics Control system for crisper handling. Inside, passengers receive a roomier cabin while a 60/40 split-folding rear seat connects to a larger trunk that can pack in 19 cubic feet of cargo. Under the hood, the base 2015 Subaru WRX features an all-new 2.0-liter direct-injected and turbocharged four-cylinder Boxer engine that produces 268 horsepower. That responsive powerplant can be mated to either the model’s first-ever six-speed manual gearbox or an available Sport Lineartronic automatic transmission that features paddle shifters as well as six- and eight-speed manual modes.
“The Subaru BRZ has attracted a whole new generation of driving enthusiasts to the brand with its lightweight design, but when it comes to brute performance that still feels light in the turns, the new WRX will be hard to beat,” said Wade Sterry, general manager of Russel Subaru, a Baltimore Subaru dealership. “Not to mention, the 2015 WRX will also be a very practical option for commuters with its spacious interior, capable all-wheel drive, and new comfort and convenience features.”
In addition to the rear camera, Bluetooth connectivity and new 4.3-inch multi-information LCD display that are standard on the new WRX, the range-topping 2015 Subaru WRX STI comes with Alcantara seat upholstery complemented by red and black leather bolsters, dual-mode heated front seats, heated side mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer. Of course, performance is also boosted in the WRX STI with the help of Subaru’s proven 305-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder Boxer engine. Outside, the 2015 WRX STI is distinguished by new design elements, including the use of mesh screens on the fender vents and a carbon-fiber-like pattern on the foglight surrounds.
